    I am blind in one eye, and sometimes in both. I have been writing Braille tools for a while: 8-dot templates, an iPhone case with an 8-dot computer braille mechanical keyboard built into the backside of the phone, ASCII to 8-dot braille (kind of like liblouis for simple computer braille). A few weeks ago, I started writing OpenAI chatbots; with the idea to make it the center of a screen reader. A few weeks ago, I was in Linux modifying Orca; which is written in Python. I got Orca to write out all of its braille and speech text as a start. What is really necessary as a screen reader: a text-only shell, like bash, zsh, etc. It should take key movements as input, and emit text as output that a braille terminal can deal with. Designed this way, you should be able to ssh into the computer, and control it. Why do it this way? Because you can then train an AI to use it, exactly the same way as a blind user. When screen readers work this way; you have leverage to encourage people to leave them on 100% of the time. Sighted people might turn the speech volume down. Some changes may need to made so that a sighted person can use the computer normally with the screen reader on; like not stealing the scroll bar, etc. If we ever want screen readers to work well, and for braille terminals to become cheap; we need to offer something to the sighted; because the number of sighted people that would use braille is still higher than the number of blind people that can use screen readers in their current form. That's why a simple 40 char terminal can still cost $2500; and a computer designed around braille costs as much as a car. The next operating system will be built around AI agents, mostly so that you can talk to your computer; and ask it to do things like "get me connected to wifi", and "bind my headphones". And blind people can stop bothering people about labelling images. Because even when people DO label images, you still need to be able to stop the screen reader and ask follow up questions like "what kind of dog is it?"

    Hi, thank you for the info and many good tips! Do you know if Narrator can switch automatically from english to french if both languages appear in a text on the same page ? I’m teaching french to an english speaking student who became blind recently so we are looking for solutions for him. Thanks again!

    • @SeattleLighthouse
      @SeattleLighthouse 10 месяцев назад

      Narrator is very much capable of language detection. Please see Chapter 4 from the Narrator user guide. Read text in other languages When reading text in a different language, Narrator will automatically select the text-to-speech (TTS) voice for that language if it's installed. To learn more about installing additional TTS voices, go to Appendix A: Supported languages and voices. If the TTS voice for a language isn’t installed, Narrator will state the name of the language and read the text using the default TTS voice.

    Now I see why the lighthouse for the blind has changed since I used to work there I didn't think it was going to be bigger than what it is now however, one day the lighthouse for the blind will be partnering with not tell him this car company that really talks about self-driving cars and pretty soon he's blind people who work at the lighthouse for the blind in Seattle will be trained on how to use self-driving cars from waymo one. But first some people who are blind or deaf blind will have to learn how he use waymo to get around between their home and lighthouse for the blind when they go to work. But when did this video I'm glad to see the lighthouse for the blind exchange and basically they've got two places that are open when in Spokane and one in Summerville South Carolina. So in a sense I think they're doing just fine right now and if they do decide to house something that could be trained so if people could use self-driving cars from waymo that will be great. But, you'll have to pick a time where they can be trained to use the service!

    Hi my name is ineko Gary I live in Tampa Florida. Thank you for sharing this video. I want to let you know that I am also deaf blind. I went up line at the age of six months old in the hands of my birth mother. She left me in the car with the windows rolled up. I wrote off the sea into plastic. Of suffocated and that’s how I became blind, and did some brain damage so I read between the second and third grade level. And then I started losing my hearing between the ages of 11 and 13 years old. And now today without hearing aids I am profoundly deaf and with hearing aids in each ear I am profoundly profoundly hard of hearing. So I am considered deaf blind.

    That's great. I will respect this organization if they pay their employees minimum wages or more and there's room for advancement and opportunities. I'm legally blind myself and I have a college education and I refuse to work for sub-minimum wages, while the CEO's who are sighted are making huge record profits off blind people that are making pennies or nothing. As the cost of living keeps going up, you can't live or survive on sub-minimum wages.

    Hi this is Josh just wanted to say something very important for all those people with disabilities such as myself shouldn't there be a law stating that if a government entity pays for your facility Western Medicaid Medicare or SSA through ssz Pokemon Social Security again talk about social security shouldn't be a law stating that they can't refuse adaptive equipment for the blind or people who are at 8 legally blind or something like that but I I'm saying that a lot of these agencies such as Catholic Charities Etc refuse to allow people even to go with a blind man stick if need be or you know what I'm talking about all of you who are blind and don't have dogs they even refused to allow dogs in their facilities I'm talking about clients who actually lived there 24/7 365 that is illegal and discriminating against people who are disabled when's Jewish Christian Muslim whatever have you if the agency that takes care of the disabled a service dog should not be able to be told no you can't have it that is highly illegal and should be punishable by the head of the agency or management of your house or facility being number one $20,000 fine first time around Second Time Around in three jail time plus defeat that I just said third time around needs to be crippled at plus jail time you know it's discriminating against the disabled and it shouldn't be tolerated first time around is $10,000 or more whatever Second Time Around display jail time third time around needs to be triple that amount plus jail time put a head of the agency or and also the head person of yours particular facility or house this type of thing should not be tolerated under any other circumstances you know why they want it but they want to be able to claim more money for you because of your disability and that is where they play their game and that needs to be stopped you should be out to be as independent as you want and still live in a facility like that doesn't make a difference whether it's yai Catholic Charities or whatever have you such type of facilities they don't even want to go in with a blind stick is that or Dak and never the less afraid the dog is going to pee on the carpet can you guys got to get together from all over the US and make this speech and saying of no service dog or no dog in a government P4 facility legal which means if I want a service dog I should be entitled to one and they cannot say no otherwise it's a criminal offense even if it's whatever agency it is that has money from the government that should be illegal and you should be able to have a dog or a stick in this case or both so anyway that's the that's the first step in my campaign it's a contact the Lighthouse for the Blind and let them know how people feel about this particular issue and also service dogs need to be number one priority any government paid for facility and whether the head of the agency or management your particular house or residence should never be able to say no ladakh when a case of blindness a stick and the client should get to pick whoever and whatever method they want to do and if the place has any complaints they should know. Be charged with a criminal offense the client's rights come first before any group home residents or whatever have you if you accept government funds and you have some you have people with disabilities it should be illegal for you to say no dog here no dock here means no service dog here or if you say direct also no service dog that should also be illegal it's me the client privilege to decide what they want weather in Maine Maui North to Alaska or fit anywhere in the 50 states or even Canada you should be entitled to whatever method fits you best God bless have a great day people and I hope then my words will inspire everyone and even if it involved a lawsuit to the government of the United States do it it is necessary God bless and remember we are not second-class citizens that's what they want to make you believe so sayonara see everybody another time

    We should know a lot of stuff that the screen reader needs to read like a regular browser it doesn't matter what the Jaws or Zoom text at this point it won't read it and I'm talking about the web-based applications we're if Microsoft has its way and other developers like apple has its way everything will be on the internet which means if it doesn't work on the internet it doesn't work. Jaws Zoom text need to be able to work with web browsers and web browser applications a lot doesn't work even in Internet Explorer Internet Explorer where they say that it works the best I've had issues where it does not work very major issues doesn't work anyway so I'm just letting you know and Jaws included some texts and Ross sound giving feedback to the community that really can use it thanks because I use these programs and I know that a lot of times it's very frustrating because it doesn't read Where You Are you can be in paint brush or you can be in or you can be in Microsoft Word wherever you want the computer things to read it to you but really didn't read it and it won't read it again to you doesn't make a difference window eyes zoomtext or drawers why does Microsoft and Apple have the right to black screen readers from using the equipment they shouldn't be allowed to from Windows or Mac or the likes or Linux or whatever have you again what do you running Mac Linux windows or any operating system the companies should have no right no business blocking a screen reader that needs to be against the law God bless unfortunately my I'm thinking for voice command went out a few times so I ended up repeating a lot but that's actually a good thing

    I'm legally blind myself. I hope they're not paying these people sub-minimum wages. I have a bachelor's degree along with additional education and worked in the health care field for many years. I will not work for sub-minimum wages!! Blind and visually people also have bills to pay and have to live. If they paid a livable wage along with a good retirement package, I would do this work. I will not work like a slave for sub-minimum wages. I would have to be homeless and desperate and living on the street before I work for sub-minimum wages.
